An evaluation of the hypoxic regulation of three ocular cell types: endothelial cells, pericytes, and pigment epithelial cells. Hypoxia induced VEGF expression in all cells in a dose-dependent and reversible manner. Endothelial cell growth was stimulated by exogenous VEGF and by media conditioned under hypoxic conditions by ocular cells. VEGF neutralizing compounds eliminated both of these responses suggesting VEGF was the primary hypoxia-induced mitogen under these conditions.
