    • Another possible explanation for the decreased binding of 2,4-pteridines relative to 2,4-diamino-5-deazapteridines is that a nitrogen atom at the 5-position abolishes an important hydrophobic contact to the enzyme, especially if this nitrogen were intramolecularly H-bonded to a molecule of water.
