Examination of mammals with similar body temperature but different metabolic rates allows the author to conclude that specific metabolic rate is an important factor which determines mammalian mitochondrial evolution [11•].

Silent nucleotide diversity is shown to range from 0% to 3.4% in D. melanogaster, from 0% to 8.0% in D. simulans, and from 0.5% to 4.1% in D. pseudoobscura, depending on the particular genes. The authors consider many causes for different silent nucleotide diversities within and between species but information on more loci seems necessary to make a definite conclusion.

This paper focuses on the phylogenetic relationship between human, chimpanzee and gorilla, concluding that the closest relative to the human is the chimpanzee rather than the gorilla. The authors also show, using autosomal DNA sequence data, that the effective size of the human population was -100000 before it diverged from the chimpanzee 4.6 million years ago.
