Cerebral perfusion pressure: Management protocol and clinical results
-
Rosner MJ, Rosner SD, Johnson AH: Cerebral perfusion pressure: management protocol and clinical results. J Neurosurg 1995, 83:949-962. An outstanding report (large clinical implications) on CPP management as primary end-point of severe head injury management. In this study, volume expansion, cerebral spinal fluid drainage, systemic vasopressors and mannitol, used to maintain a minimum CPP of at least 70mmHg, resulted in a significantly better outcome.

Jugular venous desaturationand outcome after head injury
-
Gopinath SP, Robertson CS, Contant CF: Jugular venous desaturation and outcome after head injury. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 1994, 57:717-723. The cornerstone of jugular bulb oximetry. The authors showed that jugular bulb desaturation was strongly associated with a poor neurological outcome. When the effect of jugular desaturation was adjusted for all other covariates which were found to be significant to outcome, including age, severity of injury, type of injury, lowest recorded CPP and highest recorded temperature, the incidence of jugular desaturation was still strongly significant to a worse neurological outcome (P=0.003).
