    • On the basis of the work of Whitesides et al. (Labinis, P. E.; Bain, C. D.; Whitesides, G. M. J. Phys. Chem. 1991, 95, 7017), the escape depth, λ, of photoelectrons passing through a self-assembled monolayer can be calculated using the equation λ(Å) = 9 + 0.022K.E. (eV), where K.E. is the kinetic energy of the photoelectrons in electronvolts. This gives values of 38.1 Å for S 2p electrons and 39.9 Å for Au 4f photoelectrons.
