Such rectangular-type spot images of simple alkane overlayers on graphite must be quite rare, however, because we have not observed rectangular-type spot images in >100 imaging sessions on such systems to date. This is not surprising because the packing associated with such a structure would be sterically demanding in that the packing and adsorption forces would have to overcome unfavorable repulsions between the methylene hydrogens of all adjacent molecules in a given lamella.
