The idea of modes with a finite lifetime due to energy dissipation has been generally accepted for a long time in various systems, e.g., s-d mixing, autoionization of atoms, and WG modes in a spherical microcavity. See, The Physics of Metals, I. Electrons, edited by J. M. Ziman (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1969); U. Fano, Phys. Rev. 124, 1866 (1961); J. A. Stratton, Electromagnetic Theory (McGraw-Hill, New York, 1941), p. 556, respectively.

The correspondence of transmission (or reflection) features with band structures is not limited to dielectric sphere arrays but universally known for conventional grating structures. See, for example, S. L. Chuang and J. A. Kong, J. Opt. Soc. Am. 73, 669 (1983); T. W. Ebbesen, H. J. Lezec, H. F. Ghaemi, T. Thio, and P. A. Wolff, Nature (London) 391, 667 (1998).

Experimental determination of photonic band structures of a self-assembled monolayer of microspheres by oblique transmission spectra was reported by Yamasaki and Tsutsui after the submission of the present paper. Dips similar to those in Fig. 3 have been observed in the transmission spectra. However, the comparison between the experiment and the theory has not been shown. See, T. Yamasaki and T. Tsutsui, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys., Part 1 38, 5916 (1999).
