9. The use of a cross-polarization technique to eliminate the scattered laser light is not feasible. In fact the intensity of the laser from the cleaved edge is larger than the intensity of the spontaneous emission, and the subtraction of the two cross-polarized signals, to obtain a much smaller one, increases the signal to noise ratio.
