    • Incorporation of adhesion peptides into nonadhesive hydrogels useful for tissue resurfacing
    • This paper points out an important consideration in the design of biomaterials that target specific cellular responses. For example, one must consider the biomaterials ability to inhibit nonspecific adsorption and promote specific cellular response, but the surface accessibility and concentration is key to specific recognition. This paper also demonstrates that high densities of control or active peptide sequences can generate nonspecific protein adsorption that ultimately promotes cell spreading even when the cells do not recognize a specific ligand. However, when the peptide is presented in a nonsterically hindered environment, specific cellular recognition is demonstrated by significant cell spreading only of the active peptide, even in the absence of serum proteins.

    • Using microcontact printing to pattern the attachment of mammalian cells to self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiolates on transparent films of gold and silver
    • Whitesides and co-workers developed the microcontact printing technique (μCP) that can produce patterns with dimensions as small as 200 nm in certain cases, but 1 μm conveniently. This technique is much easier, timely and less expensive than photolithography and provides a two-dimensional control of patterns. This method uses a stamp to transfer a patterned layer of alkanethiol to a gold or silver surface. Self-assembled monolayers were formed at this surface only in the regions where the alkanethiol was deposited.
