F. J. Levi received the Ph.D. from Cambridge University, England, in 1983. He joined the LSO faculty in mid 1993 after working for almost 10 years at AT&T Bell Laboratories. Murray Hill. NI. His current research interests include ultra-fast photonics and electronics, and the system-level integration of advanced opto-electronic technologies. To date he has published over 200 papers in reviewed scientific journals, and holds 11 U.S. patents in these and related areas. While at L'SC he has worked closely with and consulted for both large and small corporations in the data- and tele-communications area. Recent work in Ins research group had addressed the issue of interfacing photonic devices to electronic systems. The group has designed and implemented very high-performance sub-micron CMOS electronics specifically for this putpose. The CMOS circuits act as a bridge between a system bus and very' high-speed optoelectronics.
