    • The axial stress in the nanotube was calculated by using the simple theory of elasticity relationship σ=pR/2h between pressure (p) and stress (σ) for a thin-walled, close-ended cylinder, where R and h are the radius and thickness of the nanotube, respectively. The diameter of the SWNT (1.1 nm on average) was determined by transmission electron microscopy, and a wall thickness of 0.066 nm was used [from B. I. Yakobson, C. J. Brabec, and J. Berhole, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 2511 (1996)].
