    • in David Schneiderman (ed.), Cowansville, Quebec: Éditions Yvon Biais, In my early writings, my thinking was influenced by primordialist theory to a considerable extent, but I have become convinced that, especially in Africa, ethnic identities are often very fluid. I do not mind being criticized, but it does not make much sense to criticize statements of which I have become explicitly critical myself. Nor is it fair to detect all kinds of 'inconsistencies' between my earlier and later writings, as lan Lustick does, since my more recent work represents the many refinements and improvements that I have been steadily trying to achieve in consociational theory;
