    • The estimation of particle size distributions required the measurement of a large number of particles (ca. 400, see Fig. 2, 5, 9, 12, 15). The whole procedure of measuring lhe particles was made according to a classical method. The particles were measured on micrographs that were taken 'in focus', where the carbon film displays a much more uniform gray contrast than in the high resolution (defocussed) micrographs. A statistical distribution was obtained using quantitative analysis software (OPTIMAS). The standard error was estimated to be ±0.15 nm.
