    • Here we use the term "Michelson interferometer" rather loosely to denote a two-beam interferometer whose ideal output signal is sinusoidal, as opposed to an interferometer exploiting multiple-beam interference to generate Airy fringes. In certain respects the interferometer design we present more closely resembles a traditional Mach-Zehnder interferometer, in that the beams are not recombined by the same element that split them and the enclosed area is nonzero.

    • This is the specification for the ThorLabs PDA 150 detector that we used in the experimental work to be described. Certain commercial equipment, instruments, or materials are identified in this article in order to specify the experimental procedure adequately. Such identification is not intended to imply recommendation or endorsement by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, nor is it intended to imply that the materials or equipment identified are necessarily the best available for the purpose.

    • Additional immunity from differential optical path changes caused by temperature variations in beamsplitter BS could be achieved by inserting a compensating glass plate in the path of the reference beam.
