    • The frequency is often detuned to minimize scattering (see Sec. II A). The experiments of J. D. Miller, R. A. Cline, and D. J. Heinzen, Phys. Rev. A 47, R4567 (1993), for instance, illustrated trapping of Rb atoms at detunings ranging from 4 to 67 nm from the 795 nm transition. Nevertheless, as shown in the above cited work, a two-level description is valid. This stands in qualitative contrast to the nonresonance (quasistatic) regime of Refs. 10, 11, 14, 15 where no isolated transition can be singled out and all (nonvanishing) vibronic transitions need be taken into account.

    • 2 molecules. Since the ionization threshold is lower the higher the polarizability, different intensities are required (and can be safely used) to obtain similiar well-depths for different systems.

    • Atoms of simple level structure can be cooled to the micro- and even nano-Kelvin regime. Cooling molecules to sub-Kelvin temperatures is considerably more difficult and was realized experimentally only very recently, J. D. Weinstein, R. deCarvalho, T. Guillet, B. Friedrich, and J. M. Doyle, Nature (London) 395, 148 (1998).
