    • Thus, the author’s use of an “Asian region” and “Asian regionalism” in this study is not based on any significant conceptual improvement these terms may offer. Instead, it is used only to convey a more overarching concept that subsumes both East Asia and the Asia Pacific, which among themselves, and in their varying permutations, have come to include states from South Asia, Central Asia/Eurasia, and even across continents like Europe, North and South America. This, however, excludes regional formations specific to South Asia (notably, South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation) and Central Asia (the Shanghai Cooperation Organization).
