    • Professor of Law, University of Westminster, London. The overarching theme of this paper emerged from two conferences which provided a symmetry I had not anticipated. The initial version was presented at the 1998 SPTL Conference in Manchester, the central theme of which was the impact of the Human Rights Act 1998. The paper was finalised in May 1999, following my return from another conference near Thessaloniki in Northern Greece, reflecting on the work of the EU‐funded “ELPIS” [European Legal Practice Integrated Studies] Thematic Network. Understandably, given the time and place, the relationship between legal education and practice, ethics and the Rule of Law became a strong underlying motif to the proceedings. I must acknowledge a debt to contributors at both events for triggering a number of ideas that have influenced this paper, and more generally to the many discussions with Andy Boon, Kim Economides and Donald Nicolson which continue to provide much of the inspiration for my attempts to envisage the possibilities of an ethical legal education.
