    • The bulk nucleation boundary is known [9], but comparing two kinetic boundaries is just as problematic. Nevertheless, if we proceed, we find that the factor of 4 gives coincidence for φ > 0.1, while a factor of order 10 is needed for lower φ. This may indicate changes in the MO cubic phase structure and/or the lysozyme nucleation mechanism as protein density changes. But this level of quantitative interpretation is almost certainly unjustified in the spirit of this work.

    • Each water cell in the Pn3m structure holds 4 lysozymes. Razumas et al. [11] suggest this is why MO prefers the Im3m structure at high protein concentrations.

    • In practice, we expect α > 4.3, since the charges on the lysozyme lead to repulsive image-charge interactions close to a low-dielectric constant bilayer. At a salt concentration of ∼0.2 M, the protein-bilayer gap has to be considerably smaller than ∼0.7 nm to result in a noticeable effect.
