    • Von Segner was a Hungarian- German mathematician and physicist, who likened the liquid surface to a stretched membrane and attempted to give a mathematical description of capillary action in terms of surface tension. This attempt was unsuccessful, which may have contributed to the new concept initially being ignored. However, his view that minute attractive forces in the surface region are the root cause of surface tension has stood the test of time. It constituted the basis for the subsequent theory of surface tension

    • Gauthiers-Villars, Paris, According to an editor’s note, the Supplement had already been published in 1806. Laplace’s derivation of his law is very thorough, but not very easy to follow. His way of reasoning and choice of variables look unusual to a modern reader, and he does not mention the term surface tension anywhere. However, his parameter H/2, described as a constant characterising the peculiarities of the attractive forces near a fluid/fluid interface, does correspond to the surface tension
