Former British Foreign Secretary Lord Owen, in his opening address at the conference, 'Rhodesian UDI: 40 Years On' (London School of Economics, January 2006), remarked that Rhodesian UDI was not a Cold War issue. In contrast, the Rhodesian Front government and the South African government did regard the struggle between the white minority government and radical black nationalist movements as a 'front line in the Cold War in Southern Africa'.
