Antibacterial responses by peritoneal macrophages are enhanced following Vitamin D supplementation
-
Bacchetta J, Chun RF, Gales B, et al. Antibacterial responses by peritoneal macrophages are enhanced following vitamin D supplementation. PLoS One 2014;9:e116530. This study shows that in vitro and in vivo supplementation with vitamin D suppresses hepcidin mRNA expression in peritoneal macrophages of patients with CKD undergoing peritoneal dialysis, indicating a potential regulatory role of vitamin D in iron homoeostasis and immunity, particularly in the setting of infection.

Suppression of iron-regulatory hepcidin by Vitamin D
-
Bacchetta J, Zaritsky JJ, Sea JL, et al. Suppression of iron-regulatory hepcidin by vitamin D. J Am Soc Nephrol 2014;25:564-572. This study demonstrates a regulatory role for vitamin D in iron homeostasis by identifying VDREs on the HAMP gene, and showing that in vitro treatment of monocytes and hepacyotes with vitamin D supresses hepcidin mRNA transcription, and in vivo vitamin D supplementation of healthy humans reduces serum hepcidin concentrations.

The role of Vitamin D in regulating the iron-hepcidin-ferroportin axis in monocytes
-
Zughaier SM, Alvarez JA, Sloan JH, et al. The role of vitamin D in regulating the iron-hepcidin-ferroportin axis in monocytes. J Clin Transl Endocrinol 2014;1:19-25. This study shows that in vitro treatment with calcitriol reduces inflammatory cyokine release from monocytes, lowers hepcidin mRNA expression, and increases ferroportin mRNA expression, suggesting a regulatory role of vitamin D on the hepcidin-ferroportin axis.

FGF-23 is a negative regulator of prenatal and postnatal erythropoiesis
-
Coe LM, Madathil SV, Casu C, et al. FGF-23 is a negative regulator of prenatal and postnatal erythropoiesis. J Biol Chem 2014;289:9795-9810. This study showed that in mice with genetic depletion of FGF-23 erythropoiesis was increased, and administration of FGF-23 to wild-type mice resulted in decreased erythropoiesis, suggesting a novel role for FGF-23 as a negative regulator of erythropoiesis and potential contributor to anemia.
