This seems primarily to be a consequence of the fact that the between group component of inequality for the log-variance depends on the ratio of each group's geometric mean to the aggregate geometric mean whereas for the other indices this term depends on the ratios of arithmetic means Since the geometric mean is less affected by the skewness of the income distribution than the arithmetic mean, the log-variance of a set of geometric means will always be less than the log-variance of a set of arithmetic means. This implies that the decomposition of the log-variance index will tend to understate the between group component of inequality relative to the decomposition of another index with equivalent sensitivity to different parts of the income distribution but which depends on arithmetic rather than geometric means.
