    • Few examples were reported of conversion of some aromatic aldehydes into acyl chloride by the use of tert-butyl hypochlorite, which was then reacted with large excess of methanol to obtain the corresponding methyl ester. Aromatic aldehydes with electron-withdrawing groups did not react. The reaction of aliphatic aldehydes with tert-butyl hypochlorite gave extensive chlorination of the alkyl side chain. The employ of aqueous tert-butyl hypochlorite is limited only in cases where the use of an aqueous solution does not interfere with the reaction or the product. The use of aqueous tert-butyl hypochlorite has been slowly decreased due to reports of decomposition and instability during transportation and explosion during production
