Coronary risk factors measured in childhood and young adult life are associated with coronary artery calcification in young adults: The Muscatine Study. J Am Coll Cardiol 1996; 27:277-284. First use of EBT in an unselected population of young, asymptomatic subjects in their twenties and thirties. Indeed, first direct visualization of coronary atherosclerosis in living, unselected subjects in a community. Reflecting the natural history of atherosclerosis, coronary calcification was detected in 31% of males and 10% of females even at this young age.

Measuring the effect of risk factors on coronary atherosclerosis: Coronary calcium score vs. Angiographic disease severity
-

Measuring the effect of risk factors on coronary atherosclerosis: coronary calcium score vs. angiographic disease severity. J Am Coll Cardiol 1998; 31:1267-1273. Comparison of EBT-derived coronary calcification and selective coronary angiography as measures of the effect of cardiovascular risk factors on coronary atherosclerosis. Coronary calcification reflected risk factor exposure in a very similar fashion compared with angiography. This led to the conclusion that EBT may be useful for non-invasive evaluation of the relationships between conventional or developing cardiovascular risk factors and coronary atherosclerosis.

Comparison of electron beam computed tomography with intracoronary ultrasound and coronary angiography for the detection of coronary atherosclerosis. J Am Coll Cardiol 1997; 30:57-64. First in-vivo validation of the ability of EBT to detect calcified plaques in all stages of the disease process and to describe the topography of these plaques according to the natural history of the disease. The size of individual plaques showed little effect on the detection rate of EBT. Although some large non-calcified plaques were missed, early plaque formation was often identified more readily by EBT than angiographically.

Comparison of electron beam computed tomography scanning and conventional risk factor assessment for the prediction of angiographic coronary artery disease. J Am Coll Cardiol 1998; 32:673-679. Direct comparison between conventional risk factors and EBT-derived coronary calcification for predicting angiographically obstructive disease. Shows the independent and incremental value of coronary calcification compared with risk factors.
