    • These studies of highly symmetric CdSe semiconductor nanocrystals also used far-field imaging to determine polarization properties of individual emitters. They found broadly distributed emission modulation depths from 0 to 1, and no dependence on excitation polarization. These qualitatively different behaviors from Ag:DNAs reflect the wurtzite band structure of CdSe, which produces a 'dark' axis arising from a doubly degenerate transition dipole that is oriented isotropically in a plane. This special symmetry of the CdSe nanocrystals also allows quantitative determination of the three-dimensional orientation of the nanoclystals (including the out-of-plane tilt).
