Not in Memoriam, but in Defense
-
in, ed., I'll Take My Stand, reprint, New York: Harper, Young and eleven colleagues comprised a group called the Agrarians. They were among the few white Southerners of the era to offer a different perspective on southern history on which to build contemporary society. They discarded the moonlight and magnolias history of the Old South and elevated the yeoman farmer and his simple virtues, which stood as ramparts against "our urbanized, anti-provincial, progressive, and mobile American life." But this new version of the Old South did not so much change history as shuffle the characters. It was incomplete and omitted the millions of people-slaves- who had made the Old South a viable enterprise.
