Currently, there are three ASTM standard specifications that mostly address biodegradable plastics in composting environments, the ASTM D6400-04 Standard Specification for Compostable Plastics, ASTM D6868-03 Standard Specification for Biodegradable Plastics Used as Coatings on Paper and Other Compostable Substrates, and the ASTM D7081-05 Standard Specification for Non-Floating Biodegradable Plastics in the Marine Environment. There are various standard tests for anaerobic environments, some difficult to perform. These include ASTM D5511-02 and ASTM D5526-94(2002).
