    • Unlike fault strength, stress drop along the megathrust during an earthquake can be estimated from seismic and geodetic measurements. The stress drop during the Tohoku-Oki earthquake is measured at only a few megapascals. A stress reversal in the upper plate would not happen if this value were only a small fraction of megathrust strength.
