    • The term civil regulation comes from Simon Zadek, The Civil Corporation (London; Earthscan, 2001). It is also used by Dale Murphy and Jem Bendell, Partners in Time? (Geneva: United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, 1999). The scholarly literature on non-state regulation is beginning to increase. There are now five books on this subject by political scientists, four published since 2004: Benjamin Cashore, Geame Auld, and Deanna Newsom, Governing through Markets: Forest Certification and the Emergence of Non-State Authority (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 2004).
