    • Following De Wit et al. [15], a codimension-2 Turing-Hopf point occurs when the homogeneous steady state is about to become simultaneously destabilized by balanced Turing (spatial frequency qc) and Hopf (temporal frequency ωc) instabilities. This critical point is obtained from linear stability analysis: the eigenvalue-vs-wavenumber dispersion curve features a double degeneracy between a real root vanishing for wave number qc > 0 and a pair of complex conjugate roots α ± iωc whose real parts, α, vanish at wave number q = 0. The real root corresponds to the stationary Turing pattern at (q,ω) = (qc,0), while the complex roots correspond to the Hopf temporal oscillation (0,ωc)

    • Delirium is characterized by REM-like EEG patterns corresponding to an active but disturbed brain state that blurs into psychosis. In our modeling work, we define delirium as a shorthand for some anesthetic impairment of normal cortical function. Similarly, we define coma as a shorthand for a cortical state of profound depression. We emphasize that these are convenient labels (hence the use of quotation marks), but the clinical correctness of these labels has yet to be proven
