18362586 10.1097/ALN.0b013e31816725ef Analysis of Medicare data from patients 65 years of age and older without end-stage renal disease undergoing major noncardiac surgery between 2000 and 2004. Of 159,327 procedures, 18 % were performed on patients with heart failure and 34 % on patients with coronary artery disease. Adjusting for type of procedure, demographics and comorbidities, patients with heart failure had 63 % higher mortality and 51 % higher 30-day readmission compared to patients without heart failure or coronary artery disease

Perioperative outcome and long term mortality for heart failure patients undergoing intermediate and high risk noncardiac surgery: Impact of left ventricular ejection fraction

• Healy KO, Waksmonski CA, Altman RK, Stetson PD, Reyentovich A, Maurer MS. Perioperative outcome and long term mortality for heart failure patients undergoing intermediate and high risk noncardiac surgery: impact of left ventricular ejection fraction. Congest Heart Fail. 2010;16(2):45-9. Single center investigation of 174 pts with heart failure prior to elective or urgent, but not emergent, intermediate or major noncardiac surgery stratified by ejection fraction. Following multivariate adjustment, severely reduced ejection fraction (<30 %) was associated with adverse perioperative events. Age >80 years and history of diabetes were also independent risk factors for adverse events.
