    • The mathematics of diffusion and heat transfer are equivalent because both processes are described by Laplace's equation. Formulae for heat transfer can be used for mass transfer by substituting diffusion coefficients for thermal conductivity and diffusivity constants (see Ref. [20], Section 113I). The term D/δ in equation (339) corresponds to the heat transfer coefficient in Newton's formula for heat transfer at interfaces. Therefore the formula for heat transfer at interfaces can be used to estimate the thickness of an effective diffusion boundary layer.
