Note
-
The only conspicuous exception might be that of the journal Local Government Studies which, with a mostly UK- and Europe-centric focus, has gathered some interesting analyses of the election, leadership process, and governing coalitions sustaining mayors. Yet to date this has not stepped beyond the confines of this more traditional political science analysis, and has born little consideration as to what international role these elected officials might play.

Some caution on the limitations of these confines is obligatory, as much of the contemporary human geography scholarship on the city reminds us to see it as a place inextricably linked to context far beyond its locality.

-
This internal advocacy role does not stop at international security or environmental issues. For example, since 2005 the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has campaigned for greater gender equality in the public sector through its Standing Committee on Increasing Women's Participation in Municipal Government. By promoting initiatives like the recent Getting to 30% Project that aims at increasing the number of women in municipal government by roughly 100 every year for the next fifteen years, FCM has endeavored to encourage women who are considering running for municipal office and to promote greater sensibility for gender issues in politics.
