"Educational mission", in this context, refers to the central goals of the university as a whole: the instruction of students and the successful completion of scholarly projects. See, for example, Ernest L. Boyer, Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 1990). Although institutions such as seminaries and military colleges have additional primary goals, this discussion centers on the goals that are common to nearly all four-year colleges and universities. Libraries support the educational mission of the university to the extent that their programs and services directly affect students' academic performance and the faculty's scholarly work.
