Solids with very low (autogenous) vapor pressure can be volatilized, by a chemical reaction between the solid and the gas. The gas phase contains the solid in chemically modified form. If one changes the conditions of the so formed equilibrium gas, e.g. by lowering the temperature in the case of an endothermic volatilization reaction, from a thermodynamic viewpoint the solid must be reconverted due to the modified equilibrium position. The phenomenon is just the same as in case of a sublimation reaction: the solid migrates from higher to lower temperature, but the reason for this migration is a chemical reaction.

Most remarkable is, how many, quite different scientific problems have been touched in the course of these investigations and that many of them could be settled just by chemical vapor transport experiments. Thus, the frequent side-by-side occurrence of several entangled equilibria could be understood, new ways for the determination of thermodynamic data have been found, well-developed crystals of almost perfect quality were grown, and compounds with narrow chemical and thermal stability range were synthesized."
