The fluorescence light from the (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) ions cannot be distinguished by the camera, but by chopping one of the cooling lasers we could easily identify the position of the two isotopes. Due to the hyperfine structure of (Formula presented) two laser frequencies would be needed to obtain a clear fluorescence signal from this isotope. Hence we did not try to optically observe it
