    • note
    • These arcane mechanisms are best relegated to a footnote. Here is Freud's most succinct formulation of them: "Cathectic innervations are sent out and withdrawn in rapid periodic impulses from within to the completely pervious system Pcpt.-Cs. (φ). So long as that system is cathected in this manner, it receives perceptions (which are accompanied by consciousness) and passes the excitation on to the unconscious mnemic systems (ψ), but as soon as the cathexis is withdrawn, consciousness is extinguished.... It is as though the unconscious stretches out feelers.... This discontinuous method of functioning of the system lies at the bottom of the origin of the concept of time. " ([13], p. 231).
