The growth and development of the internet in the United States
-
B. Kogut, ed., (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press)
-
For a discussion of this unfolding in the early internet business, see M. Kenney, "The Growth and Development of the internet in the United States," in B. Kogut, ed., The Global internet Economy (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2003), pp. 69-108. The growth of the internet market is particularly interesting because it grew in two ways: First, when the market did tip, the number of users grew rapidly. This was important because of the sheer number of potential customers. However, this growth in users was only the base. The second more powerful growth was in the number of uses of the internet. This is better understood by the growth in the number of internet hosts, the number of hours that these users are online, and the seemingly endless variety of new uses that have been invented.

In most other markets, such change occurs infrequently. For example, automation sparked radical growth and re-organization of the cigarette market in the late 1880s, but remarkably little has changed in this industry during the past century. The U.S. steel industry experienced significant transformations in the 1850s with the introduction of the Bessemer steel process and again in the 1980s with the rapid diffusion of mini-mills, but otherwise has been quite stable. In a recent report, the Center for Public Integrity noted the rise in venture capital lobbying, advising us to "watch the venture capitalists that have money riding on new technology try to gain advantage in a game that so far has been deftly controlled by the old machine," In addition to lobbying, witness also the rising role of venture capitalists moving into positions within the Department of Energy and advising on the department's investment strategies.
