Samuel P Huntington in his The Third Wave: Democratization in the Late Twentieth Century described the various surges in democratic transformations, the last of which followed the collapse of the Soviet empire. It should be noted, of course, that the product of previous waves such as the Soviet collapse also have been peculiar adaptations of pluralistic democracy in which authoritarian elements have been retained.

Various families connected to 'anti-colonial' nationalist regimes have gathered immense wealth from Western investments and businesses. The Makhlouf's family business in Syria, with close family and political ties to the ruling Assad family, owns 55 per cent of the local market and manages the various foreign investments in the country.

One of the jokes widely circulated in emails and through Blackberry Messenger envisioned a scenario where Hosni Mubarak meets Anwar Sadat and Gamal Abdel Nasser, the two former Egyptian presidents, in the afterlife. Mubarak asks Nasser how he ended up there. 'Poison', Nasser says. Mubarak then turns to Sadat. 'How did you end up here?' he asks. 'An assassin's bullet', Sadat says. 'What about you?' To which Mubarak replies: 'Facebook'.
