This U.S. site offers a disclaimer in one section indicating stem cell therapies have not been approved by the FDA but at the same time, much more prominently, the site still promotes a stem cell program for stroke patients (see [Accessed 28 Dec 2011]. Integra's website offers stem cell treatments for such diseases as Parkinson's, MS, diabetes, Retinitis Pigmentosa, ALS, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Hepatitis, Muscular Dystrophy, and Autism. 22. Fetal stem cells can come from the placenta, amniotic fluid, or umbilical cord. Embryonic stem cells are typically derived from spare embryos in IVF clinics that are donated by couples who have undergone fertility treatments. 38. The debate around treatments for MS and MS therapy tourism is reflective of the same conundrum faced by stem cell treatments. In the face of growing controversy around an unproven therapy for MS for which many patients are traveling abroad for treatment, a clinical trial for MS is going to be mounted by the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, despite opposition to such efforts by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, the Canadian government, and other provincial governments. 39. It is possible that perceptions of services may vary depending on the country involved. We did not specifically investigate whether the country providing the service - in this case, Costa Rica - made a difference but none of the comments during the discussions suggested that this was a factor in the assessments or observations.
