    • In this study, arabinogalactan from grass, a plant component found in high amounts in cowshed dust, emerged as protective factor for allergic airway inflammation, airway hyperresponsiveness and atopic sensitization in a mouse model of asthma. Treatment of murine dendritic cells with grass arabinogalactan resulted in autocrine interleukin-10 production. This effect was specific for grass arabinogalactan, as it was not shown for other arabinogalactans

    • This study on the PASTURE (Protection against Allergy: Study in Rural Environments) birth cohort showed that cord blood IFN-γ and TNF-α (following PMA/inomycin stimulation) was higher in neonates of farm compared with nonfarm families. Maternal exposure to different farm animal species and barns and consumption of farm-produced butter were associated with higher pro-inflammatory cord cytokines.
