Arabinogalactan isolated from cowshed dust extract protects mice from allergic airway inflammation and sensitization
-
In this study, arabinogalactan from grass, a plant component found in high amounts in cowshed dust, emerged as protective factor for allergic airway inflammation, airway hyperresponsiveness and atopic sensitization in a mouse model of asthma. Treatment of murine dendritic cells with grass arabinogalactan resulted in autocrine interleukin-10 production. This effect was specific for grass arabinogalactan, as it was not shown for other arabinogalactans

Gene-environment interaction for childhood asthma and exposure to farming in Central Europe

This article described that asthma-associated SNPs and those previously published for interaction with asthma in the farm environment do not play a major role in the protective 'farm effect'. Rather, rare polymorphisms within the GRM1 gene influence the development of asthma and atopy in childhood in the farming environment

Cord blood cytokines are modulated by maternal farming activities and consumption of farm dairy products during pregnancy: The PASTURE Study
-
This study on the PASTURE (Protection against Allergy: Study in Rural Environments) birth cohort showed that cord blood IFN-γ and TNF-α (following PMA/inomycin stimulation) was higher in neonates of farm compared with nonfarm families. Maternal exposure to different farm animal species and barns and consumption of farm-produced butter were associated with higher pro-inflammatory cord cytokines. Maternal consumption of farm-produced yogurt during pregnancy resulted in lower IFN-γ and TNF-α in cord blood
