A GEF (guanine nucleotide exchange factor), produced by the binding of cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) at a receptor on the cell membrane, converts the inactive form of the signaling protein Ras (Ras-GDP, a complex of Ras and GDP, guanosine diphosphate) to its active form by changing the GDP to a GTP (guanosine triphosphate). A GAP (GTPase Activating Protein) catalyzes the reverse reaction.
