Strictly speaking, the assumption of factorization at t=- is not necessary. It is sufficient to assume that the final steady state depends only on the states of the reservoirs and not on the initial state of the finite central part of the system. In such a case, it is most convenient to perform calculations for the initial state whose density matrix factorizes. Certainly, the latter assumption itself is completely standard and can be easily tested experimentally by comparing steady states prepared from different initial conditions at the same temperatures and chemical potentials of the reservoirs.
