Sedation in Palliative Care. 2010. http://www.eapcnet.org/forum/It is a comprehensive review of the issue made by experts, by means of a series of papers open to discussion. Formally, they are not uniformly treated. Some are more polished and others are a mere draft. Some include references, and others mention and list the references but do not put the references itself. It is recommendable to have a panoramic view of the problem at the year 2005, when papers were submitted to the 9th Congress of the EAPC at Aachen (Germany).

Consequently, the acknowledgment of 'the other' is considered as paramount, basing on dialogic (communicative, discursive) ethics, through the thinking of Emmanuel Levinas, Karl-Otto Apel and the Argentinean philosopher Enrique Dussel. This approach to the patient- physician relationship in general, is especially relevant in the context of palliative care and, more broadly, for end-of-life decisions.

Instead of the usual discourse about quality of life, the authors speak about 'quality of death'. They relate data as the following: palliative care could benefit more than 100 million people a year, reaching only 8% of those who need it; few countries have palliative care strategies incorporated in their health policies and system, education of healthcare agents, and so. They studied 40 countries from different world regions by means of an original 'index' that they constructed, analyzing the particularities of their provision of end-of-life care, concluding that the quality of death is low for most people.
