    • Complex 3 did not show any thermal transitions before degradation at 250 °C, which is indicative of strong intermolecular interactions among the coordinated ligand groups. Complex 4 exhibited a melt transition at 131 °C on heating and an isotropic to liquid crystal transition at 124 °C on cooling. A birefringent phase was observed between 124 and 119 °C on cooling under a polarized optical microscope (ESI). The X-ray diffraction analysis showed two reflection peaks corresponding to the d spacings of 38.75 and 28.32 Å in the small angle region. These d-spacings are in the ratio of 1/2:1/√7, which is in good agreement with a hexagonal lattice with the lattice parameter of a = 87.20 Å. The peaks were indexed in sequence as (200) and (210) reflections
