    • In this Letter we have used carbohydrate/carbasugar nomenclature according to IUPAC. Hence, valienamine 1, which shares C-1-C-4 stereochemistry with α-glucose has α-xylo stereochemistry (also compounds 2, 3, 5, 8α, 10α, 11 and 13); 1-epi-valienamine has β-xylo stereochemistry (also compounds 4, 6, 12 and 14)
