NKDEP. National Kidney Disease Education Program (2010). Chronic kidney disease and drug dosing: information for providers. National Kidney Disease Education Program. http://www.nkdep.nih.gov/professionals/CKD-DrugDosing-508. pdf. [Accessed 3 March 2011] This document provides the rationale of the NKDEP for recommending use of either the Cockcroft-Gault or MDRD equation for determining drug dosing. Importantly, the NKDEP recommends converting the MDRD equation to units of ml/min when used for drug dosing in patients with very large or small BSAs and the use of measures of GFR or ClCr in patients in whom the estimating equations would not be expected to be accurate.

Levey AS, Stevens LA. Estimating GFR using the CKD epidemiology collaboration (CKD-EPI) creatinine equations: more accurate GFR estimates, lower CKD prevalence estimates, and better risk predictions. Am J Kidney Dis 2010;55:622-627. This editorial contains a concise table comparing the characteristics, performance, and application of the Cockcroft-Gault, MDRD, and CKD-EPI equations. The authors propose using Cockcroft-Gault, MDRD, and CKD-EPI for drug dosing.

Evaluation of the CKD-EPI, MDRD, and Cockcroft-Gault estimates of kidney function in elderly nursing home and hospitalized patients showing agreement in the MDRD and CKD-EPI estimates, but variable results for Cockcroft-Gault in one-third of nursing home residents.
