19674052 10.1111/j.1528-1167.2009.02254.x 1:CAS:528:DC%2BC3cXisFerurg%3D This study identified impaired balance in persons with epilepsy using AEDs when compared with matched siblings not using AEDs. Balance impairment in persons with epilepsy may contribute to increased fracture risk. An assessment of balance should be considered in persons with epilepsy treated with AEDs.

Antiepileptic drug use and rates of hip bone loss in older men: A prospective study

18765648 10.1212/01.wnl.0000324919.86696.a9 1:CAS:528:DC%2BD1cXhtVejtr7N This prospective study in older men found that treatment with non-enzyme-inducing AEDs (mostly gabapentin) was associated with bone loss at the hip. The indication for use was not identified, so it was not clear whether all subjects were treated with this agent for epilepsy or for other indications such as pain. This study highlights the need for further study of all available AEDs.

BsmI vitamin D receptor's polymorphism and bone mineral density in men and premenopausal women on long-term antiepileptic therapy

This novel study suggests that a genetic predisposition may influence whether a person with epilepsy treated with AEDs is at significant risk of bone loss.
