    • Note
    • 2 molecules to/from the tip would abruptly change the tunneling conditions and STM contrast. (ii) In independent experiments, the adsorption of larger molecules on the tip has often led to increased noise in the tunneling current due to rapid changes in molecular conformation. Neither an abrupt change in the tunneling conditions nor a characteristic noise increase have been observed in the present experiments.
