    • Age is a continuous variable. Gender is a dummy variable with men coded as 1 and women as 0. A dummy variable is one that takes the values 0 or 1 to indicate the absence or presence of some categorical effect that may be expected to influence the outcome. Age, gender and marital status are controlled in the data analysis. Marital status is a dummy variable with married respondents coded as 1 and others as 0. Nativity is also a dummy variable with Ürümchi natives coded as 1 and migrants coded as 0. There may be some "native advantages" on earnings since local people have more network ties and are more familiar with the local labor market. Education is an ordinal variable with seven levels: (1) illiterate/semi-illiterate, (2) primary school, (3) junior high school, (4) senior high school, (5) vocational school, (6) community college and (7) university. Ordinal variables order data in terms of degree. They do not establish the numeric difference between data points. They indicate only that one data point is ranked higher or lower than another. Full-time work is a dummy variable with those with full-time work coded as 1 and others as 0. CCP membership is a dummy variable with CCP members coded as 1 and others as 0. State employment is also a dummy variable with state workers coded as 1 and others as 0. Both CCP membership and state employment have been found to be positively related to high income in urban China (Yanjie Bian, Work and Inequality in Urban China [Albany: SUNY Press, 1994]).

    • Health is an ordinal variable with four levels: very good, good, okay and poor. Health can affect earnings and hence should be controlled in data analysis (Signe L. • Finally Uyghur is a dummy variable with Uyghurs coded as 1 and Han Chinese coded as 0
    • Father state worker is a dummy variable with fathers who are state workers coded as 1 and others as 0 (Yanjie Bian, Work and Inequality). Finally, Uyghur is a dummy variable with Uyghurs coded as 1 and Han Chinese coded as 0.
